The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has revealed a new symbol for the Emirati dirham, marking a historic evolution in the nation’s monetary identity — both in its physical and digital forms.
The new symbol draws from the English letter “D”, flanked by two horizontal lines that signify financial stability and echo the colors and strength of the UAE flag. This modern design will now represent the dirham in both local and international markets, reinforcing the UAE’s vision as a leading global financial hub.
Digital Dirham Takes Shape
The unveiling coincides with the CBUAE’s accelerated rollout of the digital dirham, part of its broader Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) Program, launched in 2023.
Built on blockchain technology, the digital dirham is designed to enhance financial stability, combat financial crime, and expand financial inclusion. It will be legally recognized as a universal payment method, on par with traditional cash.
“Today, we are proud to unveil the new symbol of our national currency and the digital dirham wallet design,” said Khaled Mohamed Balama, governor of the CBUAE. “This initiative paves the way for broader access, innovation, and economic resilience in a rapidly digitizing world.”
Key Features of the Digital Dirham
- Tokenization: Allows fractional ownership and improved liquidity
- Smart Contracts: Enables automated, secure, multi-party transactions with instant settlement
- Interoperability: Seamless usage across banks, fintechs, and licensed exchange houses
- Digital Wallet: Designed for retail and wholesale use, including cross-border transfers
The digital dirham will be distributed via licensed financial institutions and is intended to lower transaction costs, increase speed, and open new avenues for digital services.
First in the Region to Adopt FX Global Code
Alongside the launch, the CBUAE announced its formal adoption of the FX Global Code, becoming the first central bank in the Arab region to join the initiative. The code sets ethical standards and best practices in foreign exchange markets, enhancing trust and transparency.
This dual development — a new national symbol and a transformative digital platform — reflects the UAE’s strategic push toward monetary modernization and international credibility.
A Global Signal
As central banks worldwide explore CBDCs and next-generation payment systems, the UAE’s proactive approach signals more than innovation — it signals intent. A secure, smart, and globally recognized dirham is not only a financial tool but a symbol of economic leadership in the digital age.
