Saudi Arabia has emerged as a major hub for international sports tourism, welcoming 2.5 million visitors over the past four years as part of its ambitious Vision 2030 transformation. With 80 global sporting events hosted and billions invested in infrastructure, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a leading destination for sports enthusiasts worldwide.
A Growing Global Sports Tourism Hub
Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khatteb highlighted Saudi Arabia’s rapid rise in the global sports tourism sector, emphasizing its significant economic impact. He pointed to events like Formula 1 in Jeddah, which attracted visitors from 160 countries, generated SAR 900 million in economic benefits, and created 20,000 jobs.
Sports tourism now accounts for 10% of global tourism spending and is projected to grow by 17.5% by 2030. Saudi Arabia aims to capitalize on this trend by hosting more high-profile events and expanding its infrastructure.
Major Sporting Events Elevating Saudi Arabia’s Global Standing
The Kingdom has successfully hosted a wide range of international competitions, including:
- Formula 1 and Formula E
- WWE Super Showdown
- Saudi Pro Golf Championship
- Battle of the Champions
- International Handball Federation Super Globe
- Saudi International Meeting for Disabilities Sport
These events have not only boosted Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector but also reinforced its reputation as a premier destination for world-class sporting competitions.
FIFA World Cup 2034: The Next Big Milestone
Saudi Arabia is set to become the first country to host a 48-team FIFA World Cup in 2034. This milestone will further cement its position in global sports and tourism.
“With 60% of the world’s population within an eight-hour flight, Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to host one of the most connected and accessible tournaments in history,” said Al-Khatteb.
The Kingdom is investing in 15 state-of-the-art stadiums, designed not only for the World Cup but also to serve as long-term sports and community engagement hubs.
Investing in Future Generations and Women’s Sports
Saudi Arabia’s sports transformation extends beyond major events. Over 20,000 young athletes are currently enrolled in the Schools League, supported by 18 regional youth training centers. Additionally, an annual $300 million investment is driving the growth of football clubs across the country.
Women’s sports have seen remarkable progress, with a 149% increase since 2015, demonstrating the Kingdom’s commitment to inclusivity and global sports engagement.
The Future of Saudi Sports Tourism
By 2030, Saudi Arabia expects to welcome 150 million international tourists annually, with direct flights from 250 global destinations. Sports will continue to play a pivotal role in attracting visitors, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
As Al-Khatteb emphasized, sports tourism in Saudi Arabia goes beyond stadiums and statistics—it is about community upliftment, youth empowerment, and building a dynamic future for generations to come.
