Riyadh Takes Flight: New 40 Million Passenger Terminal Anchors Saudi Aviation Ambition

Saudi Arabia is accelerating its monumental aviation expansion, with construction scheduled to begin next year on a new 40-million-passenger terminal at King Salman International Airport (KSIA). This initial phase is a critical step in the Kingdom’s strategy to transform KSIA into one of the world’s largest aviation hubs.

The Scale of the Ambition

The new terminal represents a key element in Riyadh’s ambition to establish itself as a global gateway for business, tourism, and logistics. According to Marco Mejia, KSIA’s acting CEO, construction of the initial phase will begin in 2026, with operations scheduled to begin in 2029. This acceleration in infrastructure development highlights the scale and pace of Saudi Arabia’s aviation investment under Vision 2030.

KSIA’s ambitious masterplan calls for a six-runway mega-hub capable of handling up to 120 million passengers annually by 2030, eventually scaling to 185 million by 2050. The airport is slated to be the future home of Riyadh Air, the Kingdom’s new national carrier, and is designed to act as a major catalyst for economic diversification through enhanced connectivity and expanded cargo capacity.

Strategic Partnerships and Digital Integration

The national significance of the KSIA project was highlighted during its inaugural Partners Forum, which brought together senior figures from government bodies and the private sector. The airport signed several key memorandums of understanding, including agreements with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), TASAMA, Elm, and Cluster2. These agreements signal that KSIA is not merely a transport hub but is being designed as a digitally integrated ecosystem. The involvement of SDAIA and technology firms indicates a commitment to leveraging AI and data management to optimize operations, security, and the passenger experience, reinforcing the project’s alignment with Vision 2030’s technological transformation agenda.

Engaging the Global Supply Chain

The launch of the new 40-million-passenger terminal opens immediate and long-term structural opportunities for international businesses. The imminent 2026 construction start creates immense demand for advanced materials, construction management, specialized engineering, and air traffic control systems. Enhanced cargo capacity requires expertise in logistics management, cold chain storage, and specialized cargo handling systems, positioning the airport as a major regional logistics center. The emphasis on partnerships with SDAIA and tech firms confirms a need for specialized expertise in airport AI management, smart security systems, and passenger experience platforms. Increased connectivity will boost tourism flows, requiring immediate expansion across the capital’s hospitality, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and ground transport sectors. The move to accelerate KSIA’s development cements Riyadh’s role as a primary global gateway, offering robust, time-sensitive opportunities for specialized international contractors and technology providers.
