NEOM Installs Saudi Arabia’s First Remote-Controlled Cranes as Red Sea Port Prepares for 2026 Launch

Saudi Arabia’s $500 billion NEOM project has taken a major step forward in its logistics ambitions with the arrival of the Kingdom’s first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes at its Red Sea port. The advanced equipment, including ship-to-shore and electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes, marks a significant milestone in the construction of Terminal 1, which is set to welcome the world’s largest container vessels when operations begin in 2026.

Strategically located on the Red Sea, the Port of NEOM is being developed as a next-generation logistics hub linking Asia, Europe, and Africa. As global trade routes continue to evolve, NEOM’s port infrastructure is poised to play a central role in enhancing regional supply chain resilience, while driving forward Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for economic diversification and industrial growth.

Terminal 1 is being equipped to support ultra-large vessels, with a 900-meter quay wall and an 18.5-meter-deep access channel. Remote-controlled cranes will be operated from advanced ergonomic workstations, enabling safer, faster, and more efficient cargo handling. Horizontal transport automation is also planned, further optimizing throughput and logistics performance.

Beyond infrastructure, NEOM is investing in local talent. A two-year training program is currently preparing a cohort of Saudi nationals, including women, to manage the port’s high-tech operations. The initiative combines hands-on instruction and mentorship, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and technologically skilled workforce in Saudi logistics.

As NEOM continues to build its role as a regional trade enabler, the port’s development is creating opportunities across the logistics, transport, and industrial sectors. Forward-looking businesses, from automation providers to infrastructure developers and workforce training specialists, will find a dynamic environment to contribute to and benefit from Saudi Arabia’s next global gateway.
