Made in Italy in KSA: From a Protected Trademark to Certified Value

Saudi Arabia is a strategic market for food, design, and technology, but the value of an Italian brand depends on its ability to protect itself. The Kingdom has strengthened intellectual property protection through the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), making trademark registration a fundamental step. However, for Italian companies, legal protection is only one part of the challenge.

The real battleground is consumer perception, which is threatened by two distinct phenomena. The first is direct counterfeiting, against which trademark registration offers an indispensable legal shield. The second, more nuanced and damaging, is “Italian sounding”: products that evoke Italy with names, colors, and symbols without any actual connection, thereby eroding the value of authentic Made in Italy and creating confusion. Against this practice, legal protection alone is often not enough.

This is where authenticity certifications come into play. If trademark registration is a defensive tool, certifications like ItalyX are an offensive one: they proactively and unequivocally communicate the product’s origin and quality, offering consumers a guarantee that “Italian sounding” products cannot provide. This creates a dual layer of protection: legal protection against copies and reputational protection against imitations.

With the consumer boom linked to Vision 2030, the demand for premium and authentic products is set to grow. In this scenario, Italian companies that combine trademark registration with a clear certification of origin are not just fulfilling a formality: they are building a decisive competitive advantage to assert their identity, justify a premium positioning, and capitalize on long-term value in an increasingly demanding market.
